Altitude Test Cell For Exhaust Nozzle Model Tests

Channel 7 and 8 are cold-flow, high-pressure-ratio, static thrust stands, with the ability to exhaust either to atmosphere or into a sealed test cabin connected to a vacuum system.  A model is supported by a 3-component or 6-component strain gage force balance and is isolated from the facility piping by an elastic seal. The test data obtained from Channel 7 and Channel 8 include: measurements of axial and normal balance forces, model total and static pressures, ambient pressure and the upstream ASME meter pressures and temperature necessary to calculate the flow rate and stream thrust entering the metric portion of a model assembly.

These facilities are also used for the calibration of Turbine Powered Simulator (TPS) systems.

Facility Advantages Are:

  • Fan airflow has a minus 40 degree F dewpoint, preventing ice accumulation on the turbine exhaust nozzle.
  • Tests can be conducted at specific combinations of pressure ratio and rotor speed.
  • Tests can be conducted at inlet stagnation pressures in excess of one atmosphere.
